Hamburg 2017

F20 Forum in Hamburg – Foundations Take a Stand for Climate Action, Renewable Energy and Resilient Societies

From the 3rd to the 5th of July 2017, the Foundations Platform F20 hosted its first set of activities, including the 1st F20 High-Level Forum in the town hall of Hamburg, a few days ahead of the G20 summit in Germany.

The event gained considerable national as well as international media attention with speakers, including Auma Obama (Founder of the Sauti Kuu Foundation), Laurence Tubiana (CEO of the European Climate Foundation), Dr. Michael Otto (Founder of the Environmental Foundation Michael Otto and Head of the German Otto Group), Prof. Dr. Lord Nicholas Stern (Chair of the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science) or Dr. Amory B. Lovins (Chairman and Chief Scientist at the Rocky Mountain Institute).

The participants called upon the Heads of the G20 countries to work closely in line with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda. The speakers and multiple politicians, such as Barbara Hendricks (German Minister of the Environment) and Nicholas Hulot (French Minister of the Environment) as well as the mayors of Hamburg and Paris stressed the importance of the platform as an important bridge between various social/ civil groups, politics, business, finance, academia and civil society to reach international climate goals.

Within the panels dealing with “The Role of Civil Society and Foundations in the Global Transformation,” “The Reality of Global Decarbonisation. Economy and Policy Trends” and “The Road to Implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement,” the panellists presented their knowledge and discussed several approaches to mitigate the effects of climate change and reach the international agreements. In cooperation with the French think tank IDDRI, F20 published “Renewable Energy, Climate Action and Resilient Societies: Accelerating the Global and Local Paradigm Shift,” a report to the G20 summit 2017.

Following the main event, there were multiple side events for further engagement and exchange among the participants. These side events included various workshops discussing a broad range of areas from “Sustainability Asset Management” to “Cooperation with the Private Sector.” Overall, the events in Hamburg constitute a successful launch of this international platform of foundations and philanthropic organisations, making F20 an important contributor to implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement.
